SAVI rides with Cranleigh Riding for the Disabled

Cranleigh RDA have been very happy to hold two special riding sessions, in May and October, for partially sighted children, made possible by cooperation with the Surrey Association for Visual Impairment (SAVI). Each time a group of five children came along and for the most part none of the children had ridden before so this was a great opportunity for them to get close to horses for the first time, learn something about their care and then have their ride. As well as all the usual benefits of riding, the fact that the horses offer lots of sensory experiences – touch, smell, sound – makes them of particular value to those with partial sight.

The children enjoyed grooming the ponies and helped tack them up before mounting - quite a challenge first time out! But all of them managed magnificently and were soon looking at home in the saddle. Things went so well that, towards the end of the session, the children were able to ride out on their ponies across the fields adjacent to Casi’s Farm and happily each time the weather was fine.

We very much hope that we shall be able to continue our association with SAVI and extend the opportunity to ride to more people through them, even if this cannot be regular.
